The Blue Lacy is a mid-sized working dog that is happiest when they have a job to do. These dogs are highly intelligent and have tons of energy, which combines to make a dog that will not be happy sitting around the house all day. Given their intense characteristics, the Blue Lacy is typically more suited for a family that has a large property where their dog can go outside whenever they please. Having a Blue Lacy as an apartment dog is a risky move. The apartment arrangement will only work out if they get at least an hour of intensive exercise daily, otherwise, your new couch may pay the price…
This dog breed originated in Texas in the 1800s and was developed by the 4 Lacy brothers, hence the dog's name. The Lacy brothers developed this dog with the goal of having a farm dog that could perform just about any work-related task while being able to withstand the intense Texas weather conditions. As a result, the Blue Lacy was able to herd, hunt, guard, and perform all-around ranch work. The combination of animals that were included in the initial breed is thought to be the wolf, Greyhound, coyote, English Shepherd, and possibly other scent hounds. Given their history on the farm, the Blue Lacy has a strong prey drive and will chase after any small animals. If you have other small animals at home, it is probably not the best idea to house a Blue Lacy.
The Blue Lacy is a mid-sized dog, typically weighing 25-50 pounds. They have a natural tendency to be very territorial and are suspicious towards people they don’t know. This is the type of dog that needs a lot of training and socialization from an early age if you do not want them to become overwhelmingly protective and be an overall good family dog. Training these dogs should not be too much of an issue, as they are always ready to work and enjoy the mental stimulation that training brings (and the treats, of course).
These beautiful dogs have blue coats as their name suggests, but their coat may also appear in red or tri-colored patterns. No matter what color their coat is, Blue Lacys will all carry the gene for blue coats. While this dog has demanding needs and is not recommended for a novice dog owner, they make excellent family pets for the right owners. The bond this pup forms with its family is tight-knit, and they will always remain loyal and dedicated to their people.
