The Carolina Dog is a rare breed and is relatively new to domesticity. They have been living in the Southeast United States for hundreds of years and can still be found living in the wild in some parts of Georgia. These pups are also known as “American Dingo”, “Yellow Dog”, “Dixie Dingo” and “Yaller”.
These dogs are believed to have originated in Asia thousands of years ago. The theory is that they made their way to the United States by accompanying merchants along the Bering Strait 9000 years ago. They have always lived as pack animals and greatly prefer to be in a home with other people and animals. They would be very unhappy being left alone at home for long periods.
These pups are known to be extremely clean and independent. It is important to keep an eye on them when taking them out of the house as they have a very high prey drive. Loosely holding their leash while a squirrel runs by would surely result in your fur friend getting away from you. The American Dingo weighs between 33-55 pounds.
Do not expect your pup to be overly affectionate. While they may not be too cuddly, they will form a strong bond with their people and will be as loyal as they come. This breed will generally be slightly wary of people they are not familiar with but are not known to be aggressive. These dogs have been making it on their own for hundreds of years, so if you are looking for an independent dog that can adapt well to change, the Carolina Dog may be a perfect fit for you!
