Congratulations! Once your dog has reached this stage, they have officially passed the puppy stage. There is no doubt that the last few years have come with challenges. However, this is the age when your dog is fully developed both physically and mentally and will display significant changes. If you have been training your dog consistently throughout this period, then there is a high chance that your dog is now more willing to listen to all the basic commands. They will not fight you as much when putting the leash on before a walk; however, I still can’t promise that they will love getting a bath!

Temperament

Your dog is considered to be in their prime and will still have plenty of energy at this age. Exercise should still be a part of their daily routine for them to feel their best. Despite them still having lots of energy, you will notice that their demeanor will become calmer overall. There will be less pulling on the leash during walks, and they will display a more confident and grounded personality. Many dogs at this age will be less confrontational with other dogs, as they will not feel the need to challenge every dog they meet. If your dog still has a very unpredictable temperament at this stage, it is best to consult with a professional trainer. As the saying goes, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” and breaking bad habits will become increasingly difficult as they get older.

Health

This is the age at which your dog is in their prime and should be generally healthy. However, it is always essential to consult with your vet if your dog displays any discomfort. For adult dogs, it is usually recommended to feed them two portions of food per day with plenty of water. The amount of food you give them will, of course, depend on the breed type and their size.

Having a 3-4 year old dog at home is a wonderful experience. They have integrated themselves into the household at this point and will feel like one with the family. They will still be as playful as ever, and this is the stage where the friendship between you and your pup will start to blossom.
