The Affenpinscher is a small but feisty little pup that has become a popular ladies' dog. They are often referred to as the “Monkey dog” as ‘affen’ means monkey in German and ‘pinscher’ simply means Terrier. These 7-9 pound doggos may be small, but they are full of energy and there will never be a dull moment with them around.
This breed originated in Germany and dates back to at least the 17th century. They were originally created to act as ratters in homes, stables, and shops. They proved to be very useful for this purpose however at some point in history they caught the eye of someone that decided that they would be great companion dogs. The breed eventually began to be bred down in size, so the Affenpinschers of today are essentially the toy versions of their original selves.
While these dogs love being with their humans, they do not particularly enjoy the company of children. They detest being chased around and do not desire any type of rough play. These little monkeys will make a great watchdog, they are always on alert and ready to defend their territory. Despite their size, these little guys are fearless and will not back down from any challenge. These pups are not big barkers in general, however, if they get excited from any potential threat, it can be very difficult to calm them down.
These mustached pups are more of a rare breed and there are typically long waiting lists to acquire one. Their claim to fame is that they have a special ability to make everyone around them laugh hysterically. They are very intelligent and often perform clown-like antics that will have you laughing uncontrollably. These charming doggos will detect that you are enjoying their show and you can be sure that there will always be an encore.
