The Bearded Collie is a dog that is hard not to love. They have an enthusiastic, outgoing personality which is very desirable for many dog owners. These pups can be physically identified by their shaggy coats and their signature beards, which are essentially longer hairs that are dropping down from their chin. The “Beardie” typically weighs between 45-55 pounds.
This herding type dog was initially bred in Scotland for herding sheep and cattle. The Bearded Collie was known to be an excellent worker and was able to herd in just about any weather/terrain. The Beardie has a bounce to their step and it is theorized that they acquired this from jumping in the thick undergrowth in Scotland to be able to see where the sheep were located. Whatever the reason is, these pups love to bounce around and it is often amusing to watch them go.
Despite the very sweet nature of the Beardie, they do have some traits that may not be for everyone. Their coats alone require a more patient and tolerant owner, you can expect them to track lots of mud and dirt into your house. Even when they go take a drink from their water bowl, you can be sure that some of the water will be dispersed around the house. Their coat also requires daily grooming, so be ready to put in some extra time for maintenance.
These dogs are very high-energy and will always keep you on your toes. They are known to be escape artists, so keep a close eye on your pup when they’re off-leash! If properly trained, the Bearded Collie will be a happy, constant tail-wagging, lively animal. They love being with their people and you can be sure that this pup will become your new best friend from the day you decide to bring one home.
