The Bouvier des Flandres is one of the most exceptional dogs, these pups are capable of just about anything. These are strong, powerful working dogs that enjoy being given a task to perform. Besides their working capabilities, the Bouvier also makes an incredible family companion. These pups will be as loyal as they come and will become highly attached to all of their family members. They will love spending the day with their loved ones out in nature on a nice hike.
This doggo was originally bred in the region of Belgium called Flandres, hence their name. The full name of this dog translates to “Cow herder from Flandres”. Their tasks in their early days consisted primarily of farm-related work, which included herding cattle, pulling carts, and guarding the livestock. While they are still capable farm dogs to this day, they are also capable of various kinds of police-related work. Interestingly, the Bouvier served in both world wars as a guard dog, a messenger, and a search dog. This pup has quite the decorated history!
Weighing between 70-100 pounds, this breed is not the ideal choice if you are a clean freak. The Bouvier has a fluffy coat that is known to track a lot of dirt into the house, and let’s just say they don’t put too much effort when it comes to staying out of the mud. They will require more grooming than the average dog, but they are easy to work with, and getting them to stay still won’t be a strenuous task. The Bouvier des Flandres is an extremely intelligent animal with a good understanding of situations. These big dogs will be prepared to defend their family and home at all costs but will not behave aggressively without reason.
This breed will do best with an active family that enjoys bringing their dog on adventures. The Bouvier is not the most energetic dog in the world, but they will still require their daily run for them to feel their best. While this dog has all kinds of amazing capabilities, they will love nothing more than being a devoted family companion and spending plenty of time with their people. They will not enjoy being left alone for long periods and will want to join you wherever you may go. They may leave behind a mess sometimes, but that is a small price to pay for all of the wonderful qualities that this dog has.
