The German Longhaired Pointer, or the “GLP”, is a well-balanced dog that can be suitable for many dog lovers. These pups do have a lot of energy, but once they receive their daily exercise they tend to behave very calmly in the house. They have gentle personalities and will get along great with just about everyone they meet.
This breed was originally developed in Germany in the 19th century. They were bred to be hunting dogs, specifically “Pointers”. Hunters soon realized that this dog was too slow for their job, so they began mixing the breed with local hunting dogs. As a result, the new breed standard was released in 1897 and the new GLP contained the DNA of many different dogs. This is why you may notice your pup indulging in their heightened senses, such as smell, as they picked this up through the various breeds that they had been mixed with. In recent years, this breed has become increasingly popular outside of Germany.
Despite their long coats, the GLP is a relatively low shedder which can make them a good fit for allergy sufferers as well. The breed typically weighs between 60-71 pounds and will surely need to burn off its energy every day. They will love going out for long walks and hikes together with their people, and it is even recommended to have yard space for these dogs so that they can have space to run around and sniff anything and everything.
The personality of this breed is extremely unique, they display so much affection towards their family that it is difficult to not become instantly attached to them. Even though they are quite large, they will have no problem hopping up on your lap for a nice cuddle session. As long as your German Longhaired Pointer receives plenty of exercise daily, they will make the most amazing companions at home. It is no wonder why so many dog lovers are choosing this breed, they are truly incredible!
