The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large powerful breed. They are working dogs at heart and will always want to have a job to do. Despite their beauty and great personality, the “Swissy” is one of the lesser-known breeds. Don’t be surprised when people are constantly asking you “what kind of dog is that” whenever you take your pup on a walk.
The Swissy originated in Switzerland and is one of the countries oldest breeds. They were all around working dogs and were used to perform many tasks around the farm. The Swissy would herd cattle, pull carts, and stand guard. They are believed to have been the most popular dog breed in Switzerland at one point, however, as farming became more machine-oriented the popularity of the breed took a heavy fall.
The Swissy will make a great watchdog. Their immense size, 85-140 pounds, combined with their deep loud bark, will be enough to send just about any intruder running for the door. They have a confident nature that can come across as extremely imposing toward strangers. That being said, they are gentle at heart and will usually not be aggressive.
This handsome-looking doggo has a fairly high energy level. They enjoy being busy and will not be happy staying at home all day long. They will always be ready to go out and play, and you can be sure that you will tire out before they do. While these dogs are not owned by many, the ones that do own them will tell you how fun and loving they are toward their family. These pups are just a pleasure to be around!
