The Hamiltonstovare is a magnificent breed. They have so many great qualities that it is hard to beat them when it comes to being the ideal house pet. These dogs get along great with just about everyone they meet and love playing with children. The Hamiltonstovare is also known as the “Swedish Foxhound” or the “Hamilton Hound”, and they typically weigh between 40-75 pounds.
This breed originated in Sweden in the 1800s. The Hamiltonstovare was developed by Count Adolf Hamilton, the same man that created the Swedish Kennel Club. The goal for this breed was to create a working dog that would be able to assist hunters with catching small prey such as foxes and rabbits. These dogs are scent hounds, and as such, their specialty is leading the prey toward the hunter, as opposed to capturing the animal themselves. The Hamilton Hound needed to work in the difficult mountainous regions of Sweden, and they developed into extremely agile animals. The breed is still used until this day for hunting in Sweden.
In general, this breed tends to be happiest in the countryside. They were raised to work in this environment, and the rural setting is where they feel at home. This is not to say that they cannot live elsewhere, however, it would be preferable to at least have a yard available to them. The Hamiltonstovare still possesses a very strong prey drive and will be ready to pounce on just about anything that moves. These are hard-core working dogs at heart and have very high levels of energy, make sure that you can give them the daily exercise they require before deciding to bring one home.
The great characteristics of this breed are becoming known worldwide, and they are starting to become more and more popular in many different countries. Besides their great working abilities, the Hamiltonstovare also makes a wonderful companion dog. They are known to be extremely affectionate towards their family and will want to be with them all the time. These beautiful-looking dogs will love you unconditionally, and it is no wonder why people all around the world want to bring one of these pups home.
