The Norwegian Buhund is considered to be a dog of many trades. Their strong desire to please their people combined with their high intelligence allows them to perform just about any task. They are also independent thinkers, so once you teach them how to do something, they will begin to do it without you even asking.
This breed originated in Norway, as you may have guessed from their name. Their main purpose was to herd livestock as well as guard them. These dogs are very alert and tend to bark a lot. You can be sure that they will let you know if there are any unwanted guests on your property, however, the reality is that they are too friendly to attack anyone.
These 26-40 pound dogs have a seemingly endless amount of energy, they will need a lot of daily exercise. Physical exertion will not be enough for these pups, they want to be given a job to do as this is where they thrive. Their thick coat allows them to handle just about the coldest of days so don’t let the cold be an excuse to not take your Norwegian Buhund out to play!
This breed makes an amazing family pet, however, they are considered to be fairly rare. They love being with their people and will not want to be left out of any outing or activity. They display an unbelievable amount of affection toward their family and will want you to give them attention all the time. They get along especially well with children, so allowing your kids to play with the dog is a great idea if you are looking to tire both your kids and your dog at the same time!
