The Ibizan Hound was originally used for hunting small game such as rabbits and hares on the Spanish island of Ibiza. These athletic dogs typically weigh between 45-50 pounds and have a high energy level. These dogs can be quickly identified by their long narrow head, their large erect ears, and their beautiful red and white coat.
It is not exactly clear how these dogs arrived in Ibiza, however, their skills proved to be so useful that they are still used for hunting small game in Spain and other countries. These dogs have certain traits that greatly assist them when hunting. The “Breezer” has a remarkable sense of smell and powerful vision. Their senses allow them to identify just about any moving animal nearby. It is important to keep a close eye on your Ibizan Hound because their instinct will have them chasing just about anything that moves.
Another aspect of this dog that would be important for their owner to know is that they can jump unbelievably high. This means that they can usually jump over the fence at the dog park...and you will not be able to hide any snacks from them on the countertop. It is best not to leave these dogs home alone for long periods as they can become destructive when they get bored.
With their family, the Ibizan Hound is even-tempered and is a pleasure to be around. They have a playful nature and can often act very silly, which will have everyone in the room laughing. They do not especially enjoy being cuddled, however, one thing that you can be sure of is that they are always ready to go out and play!
