The scruffy-looking Norfolk Terrier may be small but they’ve got big dog personalities. These little guys behave like a typical working Terrier dog in the sense that they love to dig, chew and bark! When your pup isn’t busy digging for China, they will make an amazing companion dog too, they’ve got plenty of love to give.
This Terrier breed was created in the towns of Norfolk, England in the early 1800s. The original purpose of this Terrier was to hunt and kill vermin in barns, this job required the Norfolk to be alert, nimble, and have a high prey drive. The breed closely resembles the Norwich Terrier in almost every way except for one small difference; the ears of the Norfolk Terrier are folded while the ears of the Norwich Terrier are pricked. For many years, these two breeds were considered one and the same.
The 11-12 pound Norfolk Terrier has a charming personality, and even when their mischievous side comes out it is hard to get mad at them. These dogs are very outgoing, and while they will bark to alert you that someone is at the door, they will love the attention that the new visitors will surely give them. The Norfolk is always ready to play, and you can be sure that you will run out of energy long before they do.
The most important part of having a happy and healthy Norfolk Terrier is meeting their exercise needs. These pups are small, but they’ve got strong Terrier instincts that require them to go outside every day. This breed is not a couch potato and will not enjoy being home all day. Once their exercise needs are met, the Norfolk Terrier will make an incredible friend that will display endless amounts of affection.
