The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an impressive hunting dog with a history of going up against some of the largest predators. Once known as the “African Wild Hound”, these dogs were used for cornering and holding large animals such as lions, bears, and boars. This powerful dog would locate and arrive at the prey long before their hunter counterpart and would need to keep them in one place until the hunter arrived. While they are not used to hunt such large animals anymore, the Rhodesian Ridgeback still retains their strong prey drive until this day and will love chasing after small animals.
This doggo was originally developed in South Africa. The intent was to create a versatile hunting dog that would be able to withstand the harsh conditions in the bush terrain and protect the home of its owners. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is now considered a purebred dog but was initially a mix between African Dogs and various European hound dogs such as the Great Dane, Mastiff, Greyhound, and Bloodhound. This dog gets their name from the distinct ridge that runs down its spine, which is a physical trait that was passed down from its African Dog ancestors.
This dog is large, typically weighing between 70-85 pounds, and very powerful. They are recommended for a more experienced dog owner, as in addition to their size, they are extremely intelligent and can often be quite stubborn. The Rhodesian Ridgeback will need an owner that will not be timid and who can assert themselves as the dominant figure in the relationship. These pups will also need daily exercise but are not hyperenergetic and will also enjoy spending time in the house.
If you are looking for the type of dog that will be highly social and outgoing with every individual, this dog is not the right fit. They tend to be more reserved around strangers and prefer to become very close with their family members who they know and trust. When they are at home with their families, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is known to be calm and gentle. At the same time, they are always on alert and will be ready to protect their territory should any danger arise. These dogs have unique personalities, and when it comes to the loyalty they display, they are certainly a cut above the rest.
